Creating opportunities for our nurses to train and work locally

The 2020 event will again assist in bringing a key initiative to the region – a Clinical Skills Lab for Hamilton Base Hospital – to boost local pathways into nursing.

The Lab will simulate a ward environment, where students can manage patients in a clinical setting, supported by both CQUniversity and WDHS. Once accredited it will provide more options for local, regional and interstate students to gain high quality education and employment, right here in Hamilton.

Located in the previous Dialysis area at the Hospital, it will house specialist medical equipment and training mannequins to deliver the best possible training experience for our current and future nurses.

Research suggests that Australia is experiencing a 30% shortage of nurses. To tackle this issue at a local level, WDHS and CQUniversity formed a partnership in 2017 to create opportunities for students to complete a Bachelor of Nursing in Hamilton. This collaboration has been very successful in supporting students to study and complete placements, close to home. Once developed, the new Clinical Skills Lab will further grow this partnership, bringing much needed economic benefits to businesses and the town in general.
