Stomal Therapy
A Stomal Therapy Nurse cares for people who have a surgically created opening (stoma) for the excretion of faecal waste via a colostomy or ileostomy, or urine via a urostomy. These can be either temporary or permanent.
Service Provided - Clients can be seen in hospital or in their homes
In Patients -
The Service see any client who is undergoing surgery that may necessitate the formation of a stoma, have a draining wound, fistula, or require an appliance to protect skin from draining fluids.
For example:
- Pre operatively to site for a proposed stoma opening
- Education re types of appliances that will be applicable
- Patients with an existing stoma who are experiencing problems
Out Patients –
No referral required
- Act as a resource for all clients who need the service of a Stomal Therapy Nurse
- Carer support and education
- A limited supply of products is available for use in emergency situations
