The Pre-admission Unit offers a service to surgical patients prior to their admission to hospital.

The service was established to ensure hospital admission, surgery and discharge run smoothly.

Your health status, before and after surgery is as important to us as it is to you.

Where is the Unit?

The Unit is located on the first floor of the hospital. Turn left after exiting the lift and the Pre-admission Unit is the first doorway on the left, just before the Theatre double doors. Please enter and take a seat in the waiting room.

Pre-operative assessment booking process

  • The first step is to agree to the surgery
  • Then complete our screening questionnaire and deliver it to the admissions office
  • We will contact you to arrange an appointment that is convenient to you
  • Without this assessment your surgery cannot occur

Why do I need to attend a pre-operative assessment?

  • The assessment allows early identification of the need to arrange tests or a referral to your anaesthetist or doctor. This is done to avoid problems or even cancellation on the day of surgery.
  • A pre-admission assessment may reduce the time you need to stay in hospital
  • You will have the opportunity to discuss your concerns in a relaxed, 'one on one' situation.
  • We provide information on hospital routine.
  • During this appointment we will discuss and plan for your care after you leave hospital.
  • We will arrange for any support services, e.g. District Nursing, Home Help or Meals on Wheels, that you may require after you leave hospital.

Your assessment may include:

  • Either a telephone or face to face interview with the Pre-admission Clinic Nurse
  • A medical history
  • A physical examination
  • Medication history - We need to know your medication history. If you are coming in for an interview with the nurse, you will need to bring your current medications with you in their original boxes. If you are having a telephone interview, you should make sure the medications are nearby for reference.

It may also include:

  • An ECG
  • Pathology tests
  • X-rays
  • An interview with a hospital medical officer
  • An interview with your anaesthetist
  • Referral to Allied Health staff, i.e. Physiotherapy, Nutrition & Dietetics

How long will it take?

30 minutes to one hour, depending on the type of surgery you are having.
