Medical Unit

 

 

The Medical Unit is located on the ground floor of the Hamilton Base Hospital. The unit contains 19 acute and 3 sub acute (rehab) beds, with either one or two beds per room. Co-located within the Medical Unit is the  Intensive Care Unit, Emergency Department, Oncology and Rehab Units (see appropriate entries for more information).

The Medical Unit includes four telemetry beds, which are networked and monitored in ICU, a negative pressure isolation room, as well as two extra large palliative care rooms. Staff utilise Information Technology to access clients pathology results, clinical guidelines, staff communication and for workload prediction. 

Oncology

The Western District Health Service provides oncology services from its well-equipped unit co-located within the medical Unit. Up to six clients a day can be catered for in a comfortable and relaxing environment.

The unit provides a comprehensive range of chemotherapy and other related treatments. Treatment is carried out under the supervision of local physicians in conjunction with oncology specialists in major centres.

Intensive care
The level 2 four bed Intensive Care Unit (ICU) provides coronary care, high dependency and intensive care services including trauma and complex surgical cases.

Each bed within the ICU is equipped with a state of the art haemodynamic  Monitor, which is networked  to the central monitor in ICU. The central monitor provides the capability to monitor  patients in the Emergency Department, Theatre or on telemetry in the Medical/Surgical wards.

This capability is being extended to allow physicians to review data from their rooms and also from home via virtual monitoring.  

The level 2 ICU has the capacity to care for up to two ventilated patients at a time with new state of the art ventilators. Ongoing education is viewed as a priority and actively encouraged with financially assisted opportunities to undertake a graduate diploma in critical care as well as in-house up skilling courses.

Emergency Department

The Emergency Department, classified as a Regional Trauma Service provides a 24 hour service to a catchment area of approximately 30,000 people within the Southern Grampians Shire.

The department layout consists of a large resuscitation area and four emergency bays.

Emergency Staff utilise Information Technology such as the Trakcare system  to register and triage clients electronically at the point of entry to facilitate electronic patient management and data collection.

The Service provides telephone triage, disease prevention with the Needle Syringe Program and care to Hospital in the Home clients.

Ongoing education is viewed as a priority and actively encouraged with financially assisted opportunities to undertake a graduate diploma in critical care-emergency nursing as well as in-house up skilling courses.
