Annual Hospital Sunday
Appeal is going bush
1 May 2007
This year the annual Hospital Sunday Appeal is going bush.
The Western District Health Service’s yearly fundraising doorknock is taking to the country roads, and knocking on rural doors for the first time.
Each year, about 90 volunteers donate their time to collect in Hamilton, Penshurst and Dunkeld. This will continue on the weekend of May 5 and 6, with the addition of about 20 rural community members who have offered their services to expand the collection out to the farming areas.
The rural collection will take place from this week until May 13, as quite a number have large areas to cover, according to WDHS Chief Executive Officer, Mr Jim Fletcher.
The volunteers attended an information session, and left with their collection pack, and a great deal of enthusiasm for the new initiative.
Mr Fletcher said the introduction of the rural doorknock would provide an opportunity for rural residents to donate to their Health Service during the Appeal.
He added that donors were able to direct their funds to any part of the Health Service, if that was their wish.
The Hospital Sunday Appeal will be raising funds to help in the battle against bowel cancer, the most frequently diagnosed cancer in Victoria, and is raising funds for a $33,000 videocolonoscope, an updated colonoscope to replace an older model which is currently used in the Hamilton Base Hospital Theatre.
