Launch of a new South West Eating Disorders Service Map

23 February 2007

A new Eating Disorders Service Map listing treatment, support and health promotion services and resources for South West Victoria will be publicly launched on  March 1 at Youth Biz in Hamilton.

The service map has been designed to provide information locally for people living with eating disorders, their families and carers.

Community dietitians and counselling staff had found that significant numbers of their clients had either diagnosed eating disorders, or experienced symptoms of disordered eating.

Further consultation with mental health practitioners, youth workers and school-based health and welfare workers across the south west revealed that anecdotally, eating disorders appeared to be an issue of concern to health practitioners and the community.

It was also identified that clearer information about resources available locally to assist and support people with eating disorders could improve referral pathways for these individuals, their families and carers.

To support the launch, young people from Hamilton will also be involved in creating a window display highlighting the importance of healthy body image.

The service map is an initiative of the Warrnambool, Moyne and Southern Grampians women’s health resource workers, in collaboration with South West Healthcare and Western District Health Service.

The map will be launched at a public event to be attended by health practitioners, local schools and community members at Youth Biz, 222 Gray Street Hamilton, at 4pm on Thursday 1 March.
