Health professionals trained to assist smoke-free WDHS
19 August 2008
Health professionals have attended a training session to enable them to assist people who are no longer able to smoke on any WDHS campus from September 1.
In just two weeks the new WDHS Smoke-Free policy comes into effect, which means that smoking will be prohibited anywhere on the grounds of all WDHS facilities.
Elizabeth Holloway, Health Professionals Training Officer from Quit Victoria, lead a training session for WDHS health professionals, to better prepare them to help people cease smoking.
According to Quit Educator with WDHS Cathy Armstrong, the training session highlighted the effectiveness of smoking cessation interventions and the important role of health professionals.
“The training session provided the health professionals with an understanding of smoking behaviour and how people succeed in stopping.
“After the workshop the health professionals felt better equipped to run brief smoking cessation intervention in individual settings, and as further support they were provided with information about support services and resources available for smokers,” Ms Armstrong said.
