It Is Never Too Late To Get Back On Your Bike.
September 29 , 2009
Challenging the Stereotypes ‘Go for your life’ project and South West Transport Connections are now offering people over 50 the opportunity to get back on their bikes. A workshop will be held at the Hamilton Racing Club, Cavendish Road, Hamilton from 1.00pm to 5.00 pm, Thursday 15 October. This is a free workshop run by an experienced instructor who will teach the basic cycling skills and technique in a supportive environment. Participants will need to bring their own bike but free transport for participants and bikes will be available.
Western District Health Service Project Assistant, Briana Picken, said “The get back on your bike workshop is about encouraging people over 50 to feel good and have fun by experiencing the health, financial and environmental benefits of riding a bicycle”.
Becky Morton is getting back on her bike after not riding for many years. “I learnt to ride a bike as a child and in my 20’s I took it up again and rode across the United States and around the UK. It was a great way to experience new landscapes and meet people” she said. “When I returned to Australia, I rode for a while but then got out of the habit. Now I’m getting back on my bike again and will start with a few short rides and try to ride to work regularly”.

Bicycle riding is a simple, affordable easy and fun way to experience local trails and paths, visit friends and families and ride to work. Riding a bicycle is an excellent way to exercise and has benefits for people of all ages, including those over 50. Cycling is low impact and is an aerobic form of exercise, reducing the risk of chronic disease.
This activity will be in conjunction Ride to Work Day and the launch of the Southern Grampians Shire Bicycle Path Strategy.
Challenging the Stereotypes is funded by the Department of Health, Department of Planning and Community Development. The project is a partnership between Western District Health Service, Glenelg and Southern Grampians Primary Care Partnership (GSGPCP) and Southern Grampians Shire.
Bookings are essential as places are limited.
