Frances Hewett Community Centre celebrates 20 years with open day

8 August 2007

Plans for the Frances Hewett Community Centre 20th anniversary celebrations are moving ahead at a great pace with the organising committee meeting regularly to ensure everything runs smoothly on the day.

Invitations to attend the celebration and open day have been sent to former staff, service providers and people involved in FHCC’s history, and a good roll-up is anticipated.

Former coordinator of the FHCC, Bev Lewis remembers what it was like when the community centre opened, and is looking forward to catching up with some of the service providers who were there at the beginning.

“When we first moved to the original building in Brown St, it had been a tyre fitting factory, Council had built some offices at the front of building, but the back was still very open and freezing cold.”

Pat Gustus worked at the Centre as a relieving receptionist at Brown St and Gray St and was also a founding member of the Disability Support Group that still meets at FHCC today.

“Brown St was very cold but the people and clients were very warm. The new centre is just lovely, and the new waiting room is fabulous,” Pat said.

The Frances Hewett Community Centre open day is on Friday August 17 from 10am to 4pm, with a free barbeque lunch, tours of the centre, historical displays and entertainment all day.
