Hamilton hospital chapel
holds monthly services
11 March 2008
Members of the Hamilton Ministers Fellowship will conduct monthly services at the Hamilton Base Hospital Chapel from April.
Services will be held on the first Wednesday of each month at 2pm, and services are expected to run about half an hour. The first service will be held on April 2, conducted by the Reverend Peter Cook.
The Chapel was officially opened on March 4, 2005, following a successful community fundraising effort. Thanks to local church and community groups, individuals and Western District Health Service staff members a total of $275, 360 was raised for the Chapel Appeal, with an additional $21,000 raised for furnishings.
WDHS Chief Executive Officer Jim Fletcher said when the Chapel was opened, it was a welcome addition to the HBH site, providing a valued source of peace and comfort to staff, patients and their families,
But there was still opportunity for greater use of the facility, and he welcomed the commitment from the Fellowship to conduct monthly services for residents, patients and clients and their families and carers, staff and members of the public.
The chaplains who will conduct the services this year are Peter Cook from the Uniting Church, David Schulz - Presbyterian Church, Peter Mather - Anglican Church, Peter Fleming - Hamilton Community Church, Trevor Walmsley - Baptist Church, Tom Trimnell - Church of Christ, Patrick Mugavin - Catholic Church and John McMullan from the Assemblies of God.
A timetable for the services is available from the Community Liaison Office at HBH, or by calling 5551 8540.
Another addition to the Chapel which will be welcomed for the services is a piano, which was donated to the Health Service last year by musician and benefactor Bob Henderson.
The Chapel is located off the walkway connecting Allied Health to the main hospital building. People wishing to attend the services are advised to park in the Tyers St car park, and use the entrance to the walkway between the Physiotherapy Building (Hamilton House) and McKellar House.
HBH is also seeking volunteers to support this initiative. Anyone who would be interested to escort non-critical patients who wish to attend a church service, should contact Volunteer Coordinator Jeanette Ryan on 5551 8284.
