WDHS purchases state-of-the-art theatre equipment
24 January 2008
The theatre staff at Western District Health Service thanked members of the Top of the Town committee for their latest purchase – a state-of-the-art mobile intubating broncoscope.
The intubating broncoscope is used in anaesthesia, and according to Director of Anaesthetics at WDHS James Muir, is often required to navigate difficult airways, particularly with the increase in bariatric surgery at Hamilton Base Hospital.
The new broncoscope is operated by batteries rather than requiring power, which allows for greater movement in surgery, and also more rapid response around the hospital.
The Top of the Town Charity Ball raised $170,000 last year, to purchase the new Steriliser for HBH, which services all WDHS campuses, and other clinics and hospitals in the region.
The success of the Ball has meant that there were enough funds to purchase further vital pieces of equipment.
TOTT committee members Francis Pekin and Colin Thompson were keen to see the new equipment, and were provided with a demonstration by Dr Muir, as well as Joseph Mau Shun Ngui, a GP trainee anaesthetist who is working with WDHS for a year.
