Walking with the ‘Heart’ of the Community
10 May , 2011
Walking on the first Monday in May, has been the annual Heart Week activity selected by Western District Health Service (WDHS) for four consecutive years. WDHS community health nurse, Cathy Armstrong said “It is important to tackle heart disease as part of a person’s daily life and the Heart Foundation is asking people to understand their risk of heart disease and lead healthier lives.”
Ms Armstrong has combined with the Hamilton Walkers and Dunkeld Consolidated School and Kindergarten 2011, Branxholme Wallacedale Community School 2010, Cavendish State Primary School 2009, George Street State Primary School 2008, to provide a walking activity during ‘Heart Week’ to promote physical activity.
The sun shone brightly, despite predicted cold, wet, inclement weather, as the Dunkeld Consolidated School and Kindergarten students, parents, Dunkeld community members, Western District Health Service (WDHS) staff and Hamilton Walkers Group members accepted the Heart Week challenge to walk as an achievable every day event.
Ms Armstrong said “Assembling for ‘Heart’ photos each year, has been a fun challenge met with fantastic enthusiasm to participate by each of the communities and all those who have been involved. The walks have brought together people from a wide range of age groups who join afterwards in a ‘Fruit’ morning tea sponsored by WDHS and Peaches Fruit Market.”
