Hospital Sunday Doorknock Appeal has Local Surgeon’s Support

13 April 2010

The 2010 Annual Hospital Sunday Appeal will be full steam ahead to raise funds for the purchase of a portable ventilator for the Hamilton Base Hospital Intensive care and Emergency Department and a drill for Ear Nose and Throat Surgery.

Throughout the weekend of 1st and 2nd of May, volunteer collectors will be out and about knocking on doors in Hamilton, Dunkeld, Penshurst, Glenthompson, Cavendish and Branxholme. Rural collectors will be out visiting residents on farms and those living in rural areas throughout the region as well.

Volunteers including Board members, staff and community supporters will be easily recognised this wearing blue WDHS volunteer ID cards and smart blue WDHS caps, sponsored by Craig Collins Building of Hamilton.

For the past five years, local Surgeon, Mr  Peter Tung and his wife, Lynette have been regular door knockers and are looking forward to being out and about for the cause again this year. Mr Tung said, “Lynette and I volunteer for Hospital Sunday because we believe strongly in doing what we can to help the hospital to continue to provide the high level of care that the community has come to expect.”

Door knockers will accept cheque donations if residents don’t have any cash at the time of calling. If residents are not home when the door knockers come knocking, donation sheets and reply paid envelopes will be left in mailboxes, which can be returned to the hospital with a donation.

Western District Health Service  Chief Executive Officer Mr Jim Fletcher  said “Donations can be directed to any areas of WDHS upon request by donors, for example, funds can go to the nominated equipment for our operating theatre, Penshurst or Coleraine campuses, The Grange, The Birches or a particular department within the hospital, like palliative care or midwifery”.

“Last year’s Hospital Sunday Appeal raised the fantastic sum of $48,280 and we are really hoping to match that figure again this year by raising $50,000 to purchase equipment for intensive care and ear nose and throat surgery. It will be a big challenge but we are hoping for a generous response from our community. The Hospital Sunday Appeal has always been very strongly supported by our communities as people know that it makes a massive difference to the range of health services we can provide locally,” he said.

Mr Fletcher said “the hospital is still seeking more volunteers to door knock to ensure this year’s appeal would be as successful as it has been in past years. It only requires a couple of hours of your time on either the Saturday or Sunday and makes such a difference to the Health Service, so if you can help us please contact our Volunteer Coordinator, Jeanette Ryan”, he said.
