Heart Week 2010
Will you recognise a heart attack?
7 May 2010
‘Heart Week’ 2010 saw students from the Branxholme Wallacedale Community School, Branxholme Community Members and the Hamilton Walker’s learning so much more than the warning signs of a heart attack. They walked around the town Monday morning in glorious sunshine, listening intently to a snapshot of Branxholme’s 150 plus year history from Mr. Jim Gough. The entire school and community members joined the walking group including Centenarian Vera Milbourne on the leisurely walk before returning to school for a healthy ‘ Go for your life’ morning tea. Vera said “I really wanted to come on the walk to hear about Branxholme’s history and to show the young how good walking is.”
The walk organised by Western District Health Service (WDHS) Community health nurse, Cathy Armstrong who combined her efforts with the WDHS ‘Go for Your Life’ project officer, Brianna Picken, brought together a wide range of age groups, to reinforce the message that exercise can include all family members. Walking is an achievable every day event to be enjoyed and is important for Heart Health.
Ms Armstrong said “Heart Attack Warning Signs can vary and they may not always be severe. Some people do not experience chest pain at all – only discomfort in other parts of their upper body.”
