A polar bear, a tooth fairy, and Elvis all walk into a bar… No not the start of a joke – it was the second ever Arctic Blast party held at the Hamilton Club last Saturday night.
Jen Hutton chaired the organising committee and said a lot of people were initially unsure about the ‘white’ dress theme, but that guests had really got into the spirit of it for the night. “We had a few bears, a couple of house painters, Cleopatra, an Arabian sheik, an ice cube, and everything in between” she said.
The night was organised by the Western District Health Service’s Development Council to raise funds for the purchase of a modern neo-natal incubator. The Hamilton Base Hospital has one relatively new incubator, but the other one is quite old and needs replacing. The incubators are needed for newborns requiring special care post delivery.
A total of almost $30,000 was raised through a mixture of sponsorship and ticket sales, surprising even the organisers. “We were just stunned to have the community, and particularly the local business community support us like this” said Ms Hutton.
“We’d also like to pay particular tribute to those who contributed their time and energy on a completely voluntary basis – we had a group of students from the Hamilton and Alexandra College waiting on our guests all night. We also had an amazing team who put the decorations together and of course our wonderful committee members doing everything from finding sponsors, cooking the food, to cleaning up the next day.”
The next Arctic Blast party will be held in 2012.
